Alex Pall from The Chainsmokers speaks on Identity, Creativity and A Growing Audience

The Chainsmokers are a successful pair of DJs who typically rely on vocalists and songwriters to add the human element to their music. On the song “Closer” however, Andrew Taggart laid his own vocals on their hit song. This interview from July 28, 2016 takes a closer look at how the pair became a band, information on their new hit song and how they plan to grow with their audience.

Q1. How did Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall start working together?

A1. Alex was a DJ on the side in New York City and one day his manager introduced him to Andrew. They immediately started working together and Alex was able to quit his job. Their band took off from there.

Q2. How did they know working together would be a success?

A2. They both knew their strengths and their goals were in sync. They were both dedicated to working towards being great and working at it daily.

Q3. Does being a DJ duo in the electronic genre make it harder to build a strong presence as artists?

A3. That’s a yes and no. Initially they tried to assimilate to what was around in the industry, but eventually they had to break out into their own creative selves. Their songs are original and about their own lives.

Q4. It can be considered different that the Chainsmokers have their peers sing on their songs about their real lives.

A4. They feel it’s harmless and none of them write the lyrics to their songs. Alex and Andrew help write the lyrics to their songs. Some of the songs they wrote alone but even when they don’t, they are there for guidance.

Q5. How was it working with Halsey on “Closer”?

A5. It was a great experience. Halsey was always number one on the list of artists they wanted to work with. Halsey was cool and unique with a strong voice, the kind of artist they like to work with.

Q6. Do they feel they know the type of person that’s connecting with their music?

A6. Thanks to social media (instagram) they can tell they have more of an international following. They seem to be reaching ages 16 to 25 in the Philippines and South Africa. Some parents have even reached out to them saying that their 6 year old loves their songs.

Q7. How are they changing the live show and visuals to cater to their expanding audience?

A7. They are pushing themselves to keep growing with their audience. They keep shows new and exciting and unique to their band. They work hard to stay in the forefront and keep the interest of their audience.
